History 20
It was good to have everyone back today.  I trust you all had a good canoe trip!  I lectured for most of the period hoping to create a bit of a 'grand narrative' for WWII up until 1942.  Page 707 Qs 1-6 due tomorrow.

Ryan's Classes Monday May 28, 2012

History 20
We started class with a review of WWII to date.  I kept trying to trip up Eric with tricky questions, but he was on fire.  Well done Eric!  After a review we read section 3 'War in the Pacific' (pages 698-700).  Questions 1-6 on page 700 are due on Wed.

Ryan's Classes Thursday May 24, 2012

Time to get back on the wagon!  It's been too long since I updated my blog.  I am committing to blog everyday until the end of the semester!  You can hold me to this.

Native Studies
In this final unit that we started this week we will be studying self-determination, social justice, and development in regards to native peoples.  We will be focused on looking forward now that we have a general understanding of the past.

Development questions are due tomorrow!

History 20
"Pg. 695, Qs 1-7" are due today!

We got into the start of WWII today.  We read pages 695 and 696 and had many different students participate by coming to the front to identify countries on the map.  I threw the textbook because it didn't mention Canada, but did mention the USA, who hadn't even joined the war yet.  I wish RJC had better texts in this regard.  I guess it helps us to be critical learners.  We ended the class listening to Churchill's "We will never surrender" speech.  Tomorrow we will discuss the Battle of Britain and Hitler's decision to invade the USSR.

We completed a run through of the whole program!  Well done peeps!  Remember to be ready for a full dress rehearsal at the Station Arts Centre tomorrow during period 6 and tutorial.  Everyone needs to meet at the Station by 6:30 PM.  The show starts at 7, should be done by 8, and be followed by about half and hour of mingling.  We should be cleaned up by 9.  Remember to invite your friends!  I'm looking forward to this.  Everyone did a great job this morning.

History 20

Today was the last day to work on your Totalitarian Regimes assignments.  I am looking forward to hearing your presentations in class tomorrow!  Be ready!

Ryan's Classes Tuesday May 8, 2012

Peace and Justice Studies

This is the last work period before our Coffee House!  Work hard and be ready for our run through in period one tomorrow!

History 20

We spent some time discussing, well I lectured, totalitarian rule in the world today.  Dictatorships and oppressive governments are not a thing of the past.  Vladimir Putin was just reinstated as President of Russia, the Syrian government continues to oppress its people, and Canada is looking to pass a law that will allow employers to only pay short-term immigrants a portion of our minimum wage.  We need to understand how people can use power to manipulate others so that we are not manipulated ourselves.

We continued working on our Native Studies Heroes assignments.

Ryan's Classes Monday May 7, 2012

Welcome back from ALSO Week everyone!

History 20
We continued working on our 'Totalitarian Regimes' assignments.  I watched the movie 'The Wave' this weekend and I think we might watch this in class.  It is about a teacher who subtly uses authoritarian teaching methods in class to demonstrate to his students how a 'Hitler' type figure can rise to power.  Things get out of hand.  Totalitarian regimes are a lot like high school cliques, or gangs.  People want to belong and people can prey on this desire.

Student Groups for the 'Totalitarian Regimes' assignment
Hitler/Germany: Travis, Nicole, Jordan, Brayden
Franco/Spain: Josh, Sarah, Eric, Say Eh Wah
Mussolini/Italy: Johnathan, Paradise, Meghan, Cody
