Today I assigned two new, connected assignments.  Students are expected to formulate both an Aboriginal and European (French) worldview c. 1600 AD using the worksheets provided (see below).  During the this week we will be watching the movie "Black Robe" and the movie can be the primary source for information for this assignment.  I handed out a an overview of the movie in class (see below).

Ryan's Classes Friday Sept. 21, 2012

Bible Survey

Unit 1 Exam today.

History 30

Remember: "Little History of Canada" Pages 23-30 Qs are due today.

Today we discussed the handout: "France's Transition from Exploration to Settlement" (see handout below).  Champlain was the father of New France and is one of the 'major C's' of Canadian exploration history:

1) Columbus (1492)
2) Cabot (1497)
3) Cartier (1524)
4) Champlain (1604)

Champlain is significant because he personified the French focus on Canada as a colony as opposed to a land mass to simply get through on the way to the orient or to exploit and leave.  As Taylor Swift says 'You Belong to Me'.  This was the song Canada and France sang to one another in the early 1600s.

Good job on the "Parks Presentations" today!  I felt as though we all learned a bit more about our national parks and their importance.  Remember, if you did not present today you need to complete a poster instead.

Tomorrow we will continuing our study of New France, and Champlain's early settlements.

History 30

I realized that I had made a mistake by not actually giving you the pages 13-17 questions on Friday, but rather the pages 17-23 ones.  Oops!  Pages 17-23 are due tomorrow (Wednesday Sept. 19), but the "Parks Canada" assignment will now be due on Thursday.  Tomorrow will be a work period for a new "Little History..." assignment and the "Parks Canada" assignment.

In class today I discussed the importance of the early European explorers who 'discovered' Canada and the Americas.  Tomorrow's readings will discuss the importance of the early French explorers.

Confessions of Faith

We continued watching and discussing the World Religions video.  Today we covered Buddhism, Judaism, and Christianity.  We will finish this video next period.

Ryan's Classes Tuesday September 11, 2012

Confessions of Faith

Wow!  We finally met!  Good times!  Thanks for being done your homework.  We discussed the terms from the handout and began watching "Pillars of Faith" a documentary that surveys the major world religions.  This will serve as a springboard into our first unit which is 'World Religions'.

History 30

Yes, we keep going back to the curriculum.  It's what I am paid to deliver people!  But seriously, the whole 'worldview' thing is a helpful concept to consider, especially in the study of history.  It helps explain peoples' actions and helps us learn how to form new, and hopefully, better ideas and assumptions as we move forward.  Progress only happens with work.

Today students submitted the "Little History of Canada pp. 1-9 Questions Handout" then we got right into reading our "History of Parks Canada" handout.  After this riveting reading we discussed (actually mostly I talked) the way in which Canadians view "the Land" and how differing worldview compete about how to best do this.  I changed one part of the brochure assignment to reflect this discussion.  The last bit of the class students confirmed their park of choice and had a few minutes to work on their brochures.  We live in a beautiful country people!  Tomorrow will be a 'Parks Canada Brochure' work period and it will be due next Wed.

Tuesday Sept. 4, 2012: FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL!!!

Welcome back everyone!  Today we had an alternative day.  We began with breakfast and an assembly in the chapel.  We split into grades to go over school expectations.  After lunch we met in 20 min. classes to go over course outlines.  I met with both sections of History 30, and with my Bible Survey class.  I also gave my History 30 class their first assignment, a "Canada Parks Brochure and Presentation".  Everything looks good so far!
