History 20
Well, we're finished The Pianist. I hope I didn't depress you too much. It is important to look at the brutal, specific, horrific consequences of war, at least sometimes.
Now on to other things! Well, different conflicts anyway. You final assignment for the term will be a "Post-WWII Conflict" Project. This will be due next Tuesday June 19. See details below.
Native Studies 20
We finished Whale Rider today. I almost shed a tear, but I didn't. This is a powerful movie. Essentially Whale Rider is about the strength and weaknesses of tradition, and the difficulty of transitioning into the future from the past and sharing values from one generation to the next. The young have their own ideas, but need to respect and learn from their elders. But, the elders have to be open to new ideas and respect where the youth are at. Both sided need to bend a bit. Thanks for watching this movie with me. Tomorrow we will discuss it.

History 20
Two new assignments today. First, the "Heroes of History" assignment will be due on Tues. June 19. This is also the last day to hand in an assignment for semester two. Make sure to submit those late assignments before this date! Too many people get overlooked in a traditional survey of history. This assignment is a small attempt to make up for that oversight. Choose an 'unsung hero' from a historical era that we covered this year, and follow the directions below:
Second, we are starting a new movie, "The Pianist" and there are some questions that correspond with the viewing. These questions are due next Friday June 15. There are many different WWII movies that we could watch, but I like this one for three main reasons: 1) it is about an 'unsung hero', 2) it is based on a true story, and 3) it shows the progressive humiliation that the Jews faced in Poland during WWII. We often study or hear about the horrors of the concentration camps, but rarely the small steps that lead to those events. Here are the questions:
Meet in chapel for class tomorrow!
Native Studies
"Development Art" presentations today! Wow! Was I impressed with these. Such variety, and deep thinking. Way to go team! We will finish these tomorrow (Pheonix, Kelsey, Jessica, Say Eh Htoo, and Crystal). After these we will begin the movie "Whale Rider", which continues with the theme of Aboriginal societies adapting and moving forward in the modern era.

History 20
We continued watching "Hitler in Colour". We didn't finish, but due to time we will move on tomorrow. Meet in the chapel where we will begin watching "The Pianist". This movie chronicles the life of a semi-famous Jewish pianist in Poland during WWII. We will talk about many of the themes in this movie. The movie humanizes many of the stats that we have studied.

History 20
We started the class with an overview of assignments that are due. Remember to finish all of your chapter questions, and complete your bar graph assignment.
After a few minutes of class work we headed to the chapel to watch "Hitler in Colour", a documentary that covers the life and times of Adolf Hitler. The entire documentary is made of actual WWII era footage that has been redone in colour. It is a good overview of Hitler's life as well as WWII. We will watch this for the next two days.
Native Studies
We continued working on our "Development Art" projects. These are due on Wednesday. Presentations will happen then as well so be ready!
